Hair news just in peeps! The Sixties have been crowned the most stylish decade when it comes to hairstyles, according to a new poll. The survey, which was conducted by ECigaretteDirect.co.uk, asked 800 people to name which decade of the last 60 years they believe had the most desirable hairstyles and the top choice came out as the Swinging Sixties. It's not hugely surprising really when you think of the icons from that decade and some of the fabulous hairstyles around - from Twiggy's bob to Audrey Hepburn’s beehive, there were some real winners. The 60's topped the poll with over a third of the vote (34%).
The retro styles of the 1950s like the ‘Marilyn’ and the ‘Pompadour’ – sported by the likes of Elvis and James Dean - came second in the survey with just over a quarter of the vote (26%). Just under a fifth (19%) believed that the 1990's had the coolest coiffeurs, with nearly all voters naming Jennifer Aniston’s ‘Rachel’ character in Friends as the decade’s defining hairdo. The Seventies, which gave us the Farrah Fawcett ‘flick’ and the glam rock hair style barely made double figures, with only 11% naming it as their first choice. The Naughties polled particularly low on the list, gaining just eight per cent of the vote which will probably be down to the fact that those chav hair styles and crew cuts (not forgetting the ‘Croydon facelift’!) were not such a highlight for hair. But actually it was the 1980's that came bottom with just two per cent - yep, those dreaded mullets were a serious crime against hair fashion.
Cheryl Cole and Lana Del Rey favour a 60's style hair-do
It's interesting to note that the celebs of today are copying all those 50's and 60's barnets which seem to have come full circle - think Cheryl Cole in those recent L'Oreal ads and Lana Del Rey who's voluminous hair is now her signature style mark. And actually, it's quite an easy one to do yourself at home. We've outlined our top 5 tips for getting enviable, 60's style locks:
1. Shampoo - always choose a volumising shampoo and conditioner which will give you a bit of a head start whilst you wash your hair
2. Blowdry - turn your head upside down and blowdry it like mad to create volume
3. Back-brush - use a fine brush to backcomb the top section of the hair, allowing it to stand up more and give the illusion of volume
4. Mousse - use a hand sized amount of volumising mousse throughout the top and layers of the hair to add thickness and follow with a last whoosh with your hairdryer
5. Spray - Last of all, use some hair spray to set the look in place. We recommend L'Oreal Elnett (and Cheryl swears by it!)
